Steve Jobs said, "Innovation distinguishes leaders from followers."

Skoda, a Czech car brand with a history of more than 100 years, said they are using 3D printing technology to simplify the car manufacturing process. They are committed to adopting new technologies that make the design and production of cars easier and faster.

Michael Oeljeklaus, Skoda AG's board member responsible for production and logistics, said: "Skoda's latest push comes precisely from 3D printing, with which we can make parts and tools faster. New designs can be made in just a few days. Prototypes, and not having to spend a lot of money to make molds, not only saves time, but also R&D costs. In addition, we often 3D print production tools and parts that are needed on the production line to assist in production or perform repairs.”

According to Formlabs, a fully 3D printed car is still far away, but 3D printing is changing the automotive industry in other ways. Skoda isn't the only manufacturer using 3D printing technology to change the way they produce cars. Bentley Motors used the technology to create detailed parts for their concept car EXP 10 Speed 6. Volkswagen has combined 3D printing with traditional manufacturing to recreate the iconic 1962 Microbus. 3D parts made some improvements to the van, and the gasoline engine was replaced with an electric one.

3D printing reduces the need to keep inventory on hand. Manufacturers can print parts as needed instead of keeping a large number of parts on hand. The aftermarket parts industry also benefits from 3D printing. If you have an older model, you may get a custom printed part. As more manufacturers embrace the technology, the possibilities are endless.
